Satiating Primal Hunger - Project Umami
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Griffin Giordano, founder of Project Umami, located in Boulder, CO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Project Umami is a wholesale food manufacturer based in Boulder, CO, that specializes in the production of soy-free tempeh made from a variety of locally sourced legumes, grains, and seeds. Our tempeh is made using traditional tempeh-making methods, which allows us to retain the true health benefits and flavor profile of tempeh. Our customers are vegans, vegetarians, and conscious carnivores alike.
Tell us about yourself
Food motivates me. Health food, specifically, and its ability to improve the physical and mental health of others. What started me working on this business was the transformational effects I saw on my own livelihood as I took on a diet predominantly of seasonal, nutrient-rich, fresh, diverse produce. I wanted to provide these types of food to others as a service in a manner that improves their health, the health of the environment our food comes from, and our relationship with that environment.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
It may sound simple, but the ability to create a food that meets a need & benefits others and then cook that food up for people to taste and incorporate into their experience.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Prioritization and choosing what to work on.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Learn QuickBooks early on, focus on how you will manage your team before you start your business, and go for it.
