Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Puentes, Founder of Project Speech, located in Boynton Beach, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Project Speech is a pediatric speech therapy clinic in Boynton Beach, FL. We focus on helping children with varying disabilities have access to communication. You may think speech therapy is only for helping kids with a stutter or saying "R" words... but it is so much more. We help children with Autism, genetic disorders, and even cleft palates learn how to communicate. It may be with words, but sometimes we help them "talk" with gestures and communication devices. We also support families by showing them how to increase their child's communication at home and access community resources.

Tell us about yourself

I am a first-generation Latina business owner. I went into the field of speech-language pathology because I love helping others achieve their goals. After gaining experience in the field, I wanted more from my career and opened a clinic for Project Speech with the encouragement of my husband. The goal for my clinic is to make family center care the norm when it comes to helping a child communicate. My team and I all share a passion for helping children. I love coming to work every day to interact with a group of like-minded women that want nothing more than to help children and empower families.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been to grow a thriving practice in the middle of the pandemic. Thankfully, working with children keeps you flexible and quick thinking, allowing us to come up with out-of-the-box solutions to provide services to families when we can no longer do traditional in-person therapy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Well, seeing as I went to school to be a speech-language pathologist, my biggest challenge has been learning how to run a business while being a practicing therapist. I have bumped my head more than a few times, but I am grateful for the opportunity.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. My number one tip is just to start! -- It does not need to be perfect, and you do not have to have everything figured out.
  2. Develop systems in the beginning to make your life easier.
  3. Find a group of individuals going on the same journey as you in your field. -- I think the best thing I did when I opened Project Speech was joining a coaching program to learn and network with other private practice owners.
