Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Manya Chylinski and Terri Birkeland, Founders of Project BFF, located in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Project BFF's founders Manya Chylinski and Terri Birkeland believe in the power of women and their friendships, and we look for connections and friends everywhere we can find them. Project BFF is a place for women and the friendships in our lives. Through our podcast Friendshipable and our social media, we explore the joy and challenges friendship brings. Our target audience is mature women with decades of experience forming, deepening, and moving on from friendships.

Tell us about yourself

Through our social media, we've found that friendships are essential relationships for women. Our target audience has responded to our content by sharing their stories with us, which prompts reactions from our larger community. It's gratifying to see the response, reaffirming that we are on the right track.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have learned (and are still learning) a lot about launching and growing a small business. Some of the goals we outlined initially, mostly around growth and revenue, have been adjusted as we learn. In addition, we've gained a great deal from building relationships with individuals who launched similar businesses and are very supportive of us and Project BFF. And lastly, consulting with business mentors, who have seen it all before, has helped us to see positive results.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is prioritizing our ideas. We get so excited about new ideas, and there are so many options for where to take Project BFF, and we only have time to do it. So we work to understand what products, services, and activities are well-received and sustainable and which aren't. Then we make decisions based on that information to meet our mission and help our audience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Create a business structure and relationship that works for you and your co-founders. Ask for help when you need it. Look to experts who can guide you on the areas you don't know well.
