Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Greg Crafter, founder of Produce'd Inc., located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We provide indoor hydroponic garden systems called GrowBlocks. GrowBlocks allow people to grow vegetables, herbs, fruit, and lettuce greens inside the comforts of their homes all year long. We offer monthly subscriptions for live plants that are grown in our indoor hydroponic farm and come with our proprietary nutrient fertilizer.
Our customers are people that are looking for better ways to source healthier food while being environmentally conscious, all while saving money on a continuous basis.
Tell us about yourself
As a kid, I learned to garden with my parents and have always enjoyed learning about how different foods are grown, nurtured, and harvested. I became frustrated when I couldn't grow my favorite foods year-round due to the seasonal limitations based on where I lived.
This caused me to research different methods of growing food indoors with little space required. I came across hydroponics and immediately knew that it was a solution to my personal problem of growing food, and I started exploring more.
After learning how to grow food for my family in a small corner of my laundry room, I began giving food to friends and neighbors. Soon I realized that I had an opportunity to provide fresh, local, and the most nutrient-packed food to people and restaurants in my area.
My motivation comes from knowing that I'm providing a solution to the same problems others face with sourcing and affording healthy food all year long without leaving their home. Creating a lifestyle change that could positively impact our lives is very rewarding.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Similar to my motivation, knowing that we've been able to create a business model that has the potential to make a significant difference in how we grow, understand, and eat food to benefit our well-being and the environment.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Business owners have to make hard decisions that impact the direction and trajectory of the company. One of the hardest things is providing the best leadership and effective communication for team members to be most successful.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know your weaknesses, and understand why they are more important than your strengths.
- No one doing anything worthwhile can do it alone. Pick advisors and mentors with diverse "business" experiences.
- Prioritize marketing, talking, testing, and getting as much feedback as you can before officially starting your business.
