Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with William Turner, Founder of Private Chef William Turner, located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is helping people enjoy special occasions, primarily through great food and excellent service, usually in the comfort of their own homes. My clients are a cross-section of humanity; I serve everyone, from celebrities to bachelorettes. One night I could be cooking for a CEO and the board members of a Fortune 500 company, and the next, a 90-year-old birthday party. I honestly never know who is going to call next. One thing I do know is that my team and I will make sure it's an excellent experience and something they will remember. I also provide bar service and help plan parties when I'm not doing media appearances.
Tell us about yourself
My love for people is what motivates me. My beginnings were extremely humble, and that fuels everything I do. I also have a passion for great food and creating memories. But at my core, I am an artist. I stumbled into my career while working a summer job in Jr High. What started as a dishwashing job at a local seafood restaurant turned into a cook job in a few short weeks at the age of 15; I was hooked, although I didn't realize it at the time.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Besides being named the Number 1 Private Chef in Arizona twice by Phoenix Entrepreneur Magazine and Most Influential in Food by AZ Foothills Magazine. My biggest accomplishment is maintaining a flawless rating after over 1300 parties served. That means my clients are happy, and I am happy if they are happy.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Balancing work with life. That's what I struggle with the most. My business has become my life and basically took my identity. It's hard turning down business and scheduling time for me to live. I don't think I completely understand that, even to this day. Because this is my baby and my clients are like my family.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
First, make sure you are highly skilled or have a great product. And that the service or product you want to provide is actually in demand. And lastly, that you love what you do. Without a passion for whatever you choose to do, it will be extremely hard to succeed at it.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Remember to give back more than you take when possible.
