Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sunny Deol, Owner/Physiotherapist of Pursuit of Motion Physiotherapy, located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Pursuit of Motion is a physiotherapy clinic that is focused on getting back to basics. This simply means providing 100% 1-1 care and utilizing active physiotherapy interventions. Active physiotherapy includes education, self-management techniques, home exercises, and manual therapy.

Tell us about yourself

My main motivation for this business was my struggles with "high volume" clinical practices. I always developed strong bonds with clients and enjoyed spending as much time as I could with them. I was challenged as I wanted an environment that encouraged rehab and recovery, so I built my dream! It's truly amazing seeing it take form and being an environment that provides a safe space for clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been surviving during the current pandemic. I opened up this business seven months before the pandemic. I had minimal federal support due to not meeting their qualification criteria. The hard part was that my own government was not supporting one of my biggest dreams. Instead of dwelling on these things, I decided to pull up my sleeves and work harder than I've ever worked. Currently, I am working crazy hours, but a sense of pride fills me as I help keep my dream alive.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing as a business owner is keeping everyone happy. I tend to be quite a bubbly person and want to keep everyone smiling. It has been tough due to COVID, and I find it very difficult dealing with stress. I had a lot of personal things happen, and to have a lack of funding and a business that doesn't break even is a lot to deal with. It sometimes can be tough putting on a "happy face" to clients when you could be falling apart on the inside.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Develop a clear plan and vision. Make sure you have your philosophy and personal code of ethics. Never deviate from that; it's what makes you unique.
  2. Have a great team with you! This means keeping your friends and family close as you will need their support.
  3. Make sure you love what you do. This is where I always turn when times are tough.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I would like to say that it is an honor being a heartbeat of the Edmonton community. I truly believe in engaging and supporting the community, as it's these things that help heal the world. I would encourage everyone to help support local. That doesn't mean spending $$$, but it could simply be saying "thanks for staying open, for being a badass, and for fighting hard" to all of the local businesses you go to/support.
