What's your business, and who are your customers?
Prime Counseling Services was created to help folks be able to easily access quality and effective mental health services. We typically see folks dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, and difficulty with life transitions.
Tell us about yourself
I graduated with my Master's in Social Work in 2013. I was at my first job for four years, where I provided home-based services in Detroit and surrounding areas to at-risk youth. After I had my first daughter, I got a job closer to home, but still working in community mental health, where I was able to begin my work with people across the lifespan. I enjoy being able to help people recognize their small wins! Now, in my current role as the owner of Prime Counseling Services, I am enjoying my time seeing clients and training new therapists.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was growing so quickly in my first year that I was able to hire six other therapists. Also, within that year, we had either seen or are still working with 240 clients.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is working 24/7. Sadly, I do answer e-mails late at night and early in the morning. I do not practice what I preach when it comes to setting boundaries (ha!).
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You have to be okay with learning as you go because you cannot plan for every bump in the road.
- It's exhausting but eventually rewarding.
- Talk about your company as much as you want! If you can't self-promote your business, then why would anyone else talk about your company/products?
