Teach. Play. Learn. - Primarily Learning
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laurie Fyke, Owner of Primarily Learning, located in Fort Erie, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have a small business called Primarily Learning. I create Kindergarten - Grade 2 Early Literacy Resources based on the Science of Reading and market them on Teachers Pay Teachers. I author these ready-to-print primary grade resources in both English and French.
Tell us about yourself
During my teaching career, my primary focus was on students in Pre-Kindergarten through second grade. I believe all children should have the opportunity to learn, but I had to find creative ways to scaffold the learning for the varying ability levels of each child while keeping them engaged and motivated! I was encouraged by friends to market my resources. My goal was to share information and resources that will help both parents and educators empower children to maximize their reading and writing potential. Teach. Play. Learn.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I had the opportunity to share my love of literacy with others. I co-authored the Jolly Songs, published by Jolly Learning Ltd, UK. These songs teach the 42 basic sounds of the English Language through easy-to-learn nursery rhyme tunes. I also published 2 Kindergarten Assessment Books with Scholastic NY.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
We live in a busy world filled with social media. Juggling time and staying current by adapting to new technologies have been the hardest challenges.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
If you are vested in what you are doing, the work involved is more enjoyable. Don't compare yourself or your progress with others... and it takes time to build a customer base.
