Flash Frozen for Freshness - Premier Catch

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Besecker, Co-Founder of Premier Catch, located in Mercer Island, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Founded in June of 2020, Premier Catch is women-owned and family-operated in the Pacific Northwest by me and my sister-in-law, Joci. We source the highest quality, wild-caught seafood from Alaska and the Pacific Northwest and deliver incredible flash-frozen seafood to homes across America.

Tell us about yourself

Our father-in-law, Dana Besecker, started his one-man wholesale seafood company in the 1980s, which is now a global seafood wholesaler and processor, selling to over 54 countries, and run by my husband, Tyler. His company has never sold directly to consumers. When COVID-19 hit, my sister-in-law Joci and I decided it was the perfect opportunity to share this amazing resource with friends and family; hence, Premier Catch was founded.

My specific role in the company is, of course, Founder, but I mainly work as the Director of Health and Nutrition. I write educational articles for our blog, newsletter, and social media. I also sit on various industry boards to support eating wild seafood for the health of Americans and to educate about how wild seafood, managed sustainably, can feed our world for generations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment with Premier Catch so far has been launching our nationwide shipping. We began as local seafood pop-up shops during the pandemic but were quickly in a position where people were asking how they could get our awesome fish to their friends and family across the nation. Setting up an e-commerce business with a very valuable and perishable commodity is quite an accomplishment!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner, you have a unique connection to your business that runs 24/7. Balance can be very difficult!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a really great set of people around you. When your goals align and your strengths are different, you can achieve great things!
  2. Don't be afraid to try new things.
  3. Don't shortcut the important stuff. Sure, you can learn how to do many things on your own, but should you? Consider time as valuable an asset as money.
