Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Preston Ross III, CEO of PR3 FITNESS, located in Hyattsville, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

PR3 FITNESS is an in-person and online health and wellness business aimed at motivating and inspiring others to be the best version of themselves. My customers are anyone ready and willing to change for the better.

Tell us about yourself

I am an ex-professional basketball player who, after experiencing a ruptured patellar tendon, thought everything I had ever worked for was completely gone. At this time, there was no plan B for me. It was basketball and nothing else.

Eventually, I took advantage of my degree and got an office job while still wearing an immobilizer brace. I would get dropped at my supervisor’s and had to ride to work with her because I couldn’t drive. Fast forward to a year and a half later, I’m still working an office job in a different field, and I got to a point where I literally dreaded what I was doing every single day.

By this time, I was in recovery, and people noticed how well I was bouncing back and the results I was getting. When people see this, they become inspired and curious about what you’re doing and how you’re doing it. I found joy in helping people when they’d asked, and then it dawned on me that maybe I could actually make something out of this.

At this time, Covid had shut the country down. I took advantage of that time to take a 10-week NASM CPT course online and became a certified personal trainer. Maybe a month later, I quit my 9-5 and went all in on growing my business while also driving for UberEats.

What motivates me most is knowing that I’m positively changing lives and able to make an impact on people’s lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As I come up on two years of being a CPT, I’d say my biggest accomplishment is gaining family and friends. While I keep a professional client/trainer relationship, my care for them goes much deeper than that.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing, especially in the early stages, is staying motivated and still grinding to provide during those months when just one of your clients taking off is a financial hit.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. I’d say do some sort of personal development every day. Even if it’s just 10-15 minutes, it’s very beneficial.
  2. Don’t be afraid to talk to people. You learn a lot by networking and just having conversations with like-minded people.
  3. Enjoy every step of the journey, the highs and lows. There will be days you’ll look back and remember where you used to be, and it’ll make you really appreciate where you are in the present day. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I’ve built my business on three words: Passion, Persistence, and PuRpos3.
