Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Martina Kuhlmeyer, founder of Power Up Your Team, located in Needham, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Power Up Your Team helps women small business owners build a more resilient team so they can scale up and win in the marketplace. Over a five-month 1:1 co-creative partnership, I help clients gain clarity on their vision and strategy, learn to lead with authenticity, find opportunities to maximize their team’s potential, and keep a pulse on the business. As a result, clients can step more fully into the CEO role and lead their businesses with more confidence and ease to the next level of success.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked for large and small companies driving strategic initiatives and leading business operations. I mentored hundreds of associates on continuous improvement techniques and coached executives on creating engaging work environments through clear alignment between strategy, people, and their work processes. Over the years, I have developed a passion for creating successful teams and engaging cultures.

After 30 years, I decided that it was time for a change. I rounded up my formal education with a professional coach certification and ventured into entrepreneurship. I decided to work with women small business owners because, while the number of women-owned businesses has skyrocketed over the last decades, many of them are very small. With Power Up Your Team, I like to help women who want to scale their business to the next level of success.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I found a coaching niche that I am truly passionate about and have lots of value to give. I am thrilled when my clients say that my passion is contagious and they start believing in their own power to turn their vision into reality.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It’s the combination of staying the course while being flexible to recognize and adjust approaches that don’t work. For any business, it takes time to get traction, and it’s important not to lose confidence during that ramp-up time. There is a lot of feedback along the way. It’s important to stay aligned with your purpose and not get distracted.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

As you create the business, think about your target audience and the value you can bring. I think it’s important to create a small niche so that your clients have a chance to find you. It’s easier to spot a koi fish in a small pond than plankton in the ocean.
