Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stacy Hall, co-founder of Potty Safe LLC., located in Exeter, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Potty Safe, and we are helping parents everywhere take the No Mess, Less Stress approach to potty training. Potty Safe is the first and only child-proof potty training chair that features a patented latch that secures the waste bowl to the base so that children can't remove it and make a mess.
Potty Training—these can be two of the scariest words in parenting. Toddlers love to be big helpers, and that includes helping empty their own potty. Potty Safe helps eliminate messy spills and some of that stress that comes along with potty training. With a Potty Safe, you will have time to celebrate those wonderful potty training accomplishments and not waste time cleaning them up off the floor!
Tell us about yourself
I have been an accountant for the past 15 years. I become an entrepreneur out of necessity. While my husband and I were potty training our firstborn, she loved to empty her potty all by herself. This quickly led to some big and messy spills. I searched everywhere for a "child-proof" potty training chair to no avail. That is when we took matters into our own hands and created our own. Potty Safe was born!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say that the biggest accomplishment in itself is getting an idea made into a real tangible product and on the market. There are many different steps involved.
I am an accountant, my husband is a welder, and we also operate a full-time cattle operation. To say the least, we knew absolutely nothing about getting a product to market. *Insert big belly laugh here* But oh boy, did we figure it out along the way!
In May 2020, we were fortunate to air on ABC's National TV show Shark Tank. Why we were one of the few selected to make it through the very numerous rounds, I will never know, but I still pinch myself. It has been a little over two years, and we still receive emails from all over the world about seeing our episode! It has definitely been a dream check mark on the bucket list.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Perseverance. Along the journey, you will have setbacks after setbacks. It is hard not to get discouraged at some point. However, remind yourself that these setbacks are only preparing you for where you are supposed to be in the future, even if you don't realize it at the time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Things do not happen overnight. Even if you encounter setbacks, pick yourself up and start again.
- Fasten your seatbelt. Owning a business is a financial and emotional roller coaster.
- Sacrifice. Owning a business takes many sacrifices in time and money. Remember your goal and make those sacrifices to make it happen.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
At the end of the day, live with no regrets. Before we launched our business, we prayed a long time about it. It was a risky decision. In the end, those sacrifices paid off. But when we started, we knew that in the end, we would rather try and fail than fail to try. We didn't want to look back years later and wonder, "what if we would have....".
