Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dorina Kroll, Owner of Potomac Physical Therapy & Rehab, located in Rockville, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own Potomac Physical Therapy and Rehab, a concierge physical therapy clinic that comes to you. Our patients are busy mothers and their families. By making PT more convenient, we can reach these busy mothers who want to feel like their best and strongest selves.

Tell us about yourself

As a mom of 2, I can totally relate to the busy mother who prioritizes her family, house, work, and everything else over her own health. Especially in the postpartum phase, the thought of getting childcare, traveling to and from a clinic, and even just leaving the house can be overwhelming. I started my business so I could help mothers who need physical therapy but also need that therapy to be extremely convenient and not disturb the flow of their busy day. Helping moms reconnect with their bodies and hearing stories about how they are engaging in activities that bring them joy now that they are no longer in pain - that is my motivation!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to hire independent contractors who are as passionate about physical therapy as I am and allowing them to practice in a way that gives them freedom from burnout. We are physical therapists that went into this field to help people feel better - but found that, in reality, most of what we did was paperwork and trying to please insurance companies. Starting my own practice and eliminating the relationship with insurance companies allows us to focus on the patient in front of us. We see results much faster, and our patients can tell the difference. They tell us all the time! And more importantly, my therapists and I are able to focus on our own health, our families, and a life outside of work.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Setting boundaries. Turning off the computer, putting down the phone, and being present in the ongoings of life outside of work. One of the reasons I started my business was because I was spending all my free time thinking about work! I wanted to focus on my family. But all of a sudden, I found myself in the same cycle. The pandemic didn't help because we were all home, basically working at whatever time was available to us. I got used to taking calls in the evening and answering emails in bed. Setting up boundaries for where and when I was conducting business really helped, but I still occasionally find myself checking emails in the middle of the night!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. If you are able to start without a lot of overhead, I will go for it. You could wait forever if you're waiting for the "right time. It doesn't have to be perfect, and you will learn so much in that first year.
  2. Don't get too caught up in your competition. Just look around, and you'll see that everyone has competition (just look at all the various streaming services!) There is plenty to go around. And there is only one you!
  3. Find your people. Whether virtual or in real life, find others who are trying to grow a business and get together once in a while. You'll find that you share a lot of the same fears and struggles and that you can all help each other.
