Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Sheard, Owner of Poppy’s Therapeutic Corner, LLC., located in Cincinnati, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own a mental health group practice called Poppy's Therapeutic Corner. We are located in Cincinnati and Dayton, OH. We provide mental health counseling and care management to the citizens of Hamilton and Montgomery county. The majority of our clients are African Americans.
Tell us about yourself
Since I was 16 years old, after taking my first Psychology class in HS, I knew I wanted to have my own practice. The world of mental health has always been so fascinating to me. Understanding the mind and how we all operate so differently but still the same. It took me an additional 18 years to open the doors of my practice, and now it is four years old. I learned a ton on my journey and incorporated all of those life lessons into Poppy's. My business is named after my daughter. She is my motivation to continue to run my business every day. I would love for her to be in a world where mental health is the norm, and I believe we are making great strides in that direction.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is employing black therapists and teaching them how to start their own practices in hopes of building generational wealth for their families.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Imposter Syndrome. It's real. Some days I can't believe I own a business that has employed over 50 black mental health providers in the last four years. Some of those 50 + individuals have branched out and are very successful running their own practices. It's surreal.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just start. There will never be a good time to start, so you have to take that leap of faith.
- Give yourself grace. Running a business has its ups and downs. Allowing yourself the space and grace to learn from mistakes made will make you a better business owner.
- Understanding that everything is a process. Finding comfort as you navigate how the process works in whatever service or product you sell.
