Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in podcasting, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Dougherty, the co-founder of One Stone Creating and the Business Podcast from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.
Tell us all about your business...
One Stone Creative is a podcast production agency that specializes in business/branded podcasts. The Business Podcast Blueprint is a training program and support community that provides 1:1 advice and strategic support to podcast hosts and managers. Our goal is always to create multi-media content that fits seamlessly into broader marketing programs.
What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?
I fell backward into podcast production - a former colleague whose background was in broadcast radio reached out one day and said: "Want to start a business together?" and I replied: "With you? Heck yeah!" Then we put our skills (marketing strategy and audio engineering) together and decided that B2B podcasting was the industry for us! We've been doing it for about five years now, and it's so much fun. I love the variety in each day and that there is always something new t learn. Just currently, we're working on our second annual research report - The State of Business Podcasting - it's lovely to be able to think of projects and go for them!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Probably the State of Business Podcasting Report! OneStoneCreative.net/Report - it's a comprehensive review of the top 100 business podcasts, what they're doing and what we can learn from them. We're about to publish the second one, and just having actual, accurate data about such a nebulous industry is fabulous.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?
The hardest thing is also the best thing, I think. There's no one to tell you what to do! There are certainly days I wish I could 'kick something upstairs' - but there is no upstairs, so I need to get the things done and make the decisions. Overall, I like it much more than it torments me. ;-)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?
- Whatever price you're thinking of charging, raise it.
- Experiment! Try new things. You're allowed to change what you sell and how when you find new and better ways.
- 'Rise and Grind' and Hustle Culture are BS. You deserve a balanced life as a business owner as much as anyone else. There might be times when you have to work more than is reasonable, of course, but you MUST make sure you get time to recuperate and relax! No one else will.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Dollars to donuts, podcasting is one of the most efficient ways to create content and build relationships for your business. Get in touch if you'd like to discuss this!
