Full-Service Podcast Production House - Podcast Boutique
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Max Graham, co-owner of Podcast Boutique, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I co-own a media company named Podcast Boutique. We post-produce podcasts and create the assets to promote them, such as show notes, graphics, and short-form captioned videos for social media. Our clients are independent podcasters who are serious about releasing a high-quality podcast but don't have the time to focus on post-production.
Tell us about yourself
I was a successful touring DJ and musician for 20 years, and when it came time to stop living on planes and in hotels, I gravitated to a way of staying within the audio world but not having to stay up all night to make a living. In 2017 I started with my first podcast, which was by Kevin Chemidlin (of Grow The Show fame), and I've been helping clients sound their best ever since. This job is perfect for an introvert like me. We have a small boutique of amazing clients, and no travel or office is required.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Well, this particular company is quite young in its current form. But I would say my ability to drill into what's efficient and cut out time-wasting steps and processes has been something I've enjoyed that has benefitted my partner in the business, my team, and ultimately the clients.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
With Podcast Boutique, specifically, balancing the expectations of clients with what's real and possible, especially when it comes to creative work and audio specifically. Overall it's guessing the future, where things are going, where to focus time and resources on, and taking those risks.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Don't wait. Start today and make mistakes and learn as you go. Don't be afraid to make those mistakes, as every mistake is a way of learning how not to do something. Learn to use google sheets (excel)! Tracking data and accounting is critical, and it's amazing how many people don't know what's coming and going on in their finances.
