Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Bradley, Founder, and Creator of PocoMuses, located in Richmond, VA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a small YouTuber, and my audience is anyone who needs a laugh or smile, some background noise, anything! I love what I create, whether it be music, react videos, vlogs, really anything at all, and I hope it brings others as much joy as it does me. I love to create and just be a weirdo.
Tell us about yourself
I was in a college degree, music therapy, literally a semester away from finishing, and I just… didn’t want it anymore. It was a really difficult decision to leave because I was so passionate about it for years, but I’m glad I did because it led me to my real passion: creating. I adore music, the act of crafting it, the satisfaction of finishing it, and the utter joy of knowing that my audience enjoys it. That’s exactly how I feel about the rest of my content as well. It just feels right to do this; it feels like me and I want to do it for as long as I can, even when it gets tough.
Honestly, I had wanted to be a YouTuber since I was 12 years old because YouTubers I had watched- and still watch to this day- were always there for me. They were some company that brought a smile to my face when I needed it most. They felt at home, a warm hug after a difficult day. I can’t imagine my life without them. I’m grateful to them for planting that seed all those years ago because a decade later, it finally bloomed. So, I hope I can do at least half that much for others, as well as have fun making my content! I just make whatever I want because my content is… me. And my journey in chasing my dream.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
After just a year of creating and hard work, I managed to monetize my YouTube channel, meaning I can now earn money through my videos! It was so surreal when it happened because I had dreamt about becoming a YouTube Partner for so long. And now I’m finally here.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being your own boss is wonderful but can also be so taxing. I’ve always been hard on myself, and this journey is no exception. I know it comes from a good place because I want to reach my potential, provide for my family, etc., so it can be very challenging to give myself a break! I’m sure many business owners of all kinds deal with this, the pressures of making something successful. But success can mean multiple things, and it’s important to count them all, little by little. I have to constantly remind myself to take a step at a time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Although a bit cheesy, the first tip I have is to please go after that dream of yours. You’ll never know the amazing things you’ll learn, both in skill and in self. My second tip- which I think is just as important as the first- is to have a plan, especially financially, to realistically get there. How could it look in your budget? How could it fit into your other responsibilities? Whether you have support to go after it full-time, can only do it part-time for a while, or any other circumstance, you must do what works for you. And my third tip, partly in response to the second, is to be patient with yourself and the process and trust yourself. You know what you’re doing, and you can make it happen!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Right now, I don’t earn very much; in fact, from an objective standpoint, this probably looks like it’s not worth it. But I just love it. What I care about most is making what I want and hopefully making people happy along the way. Defining my success along those parameters, I’ve already succeeded, even as small as I am. There’s only up to go!
