Vegan, Gluten-Free & Soy-Free Cookies on the Planet - PNW

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Callie Carpenter, Founder of Pacific Northwest Cookie Company, located in Chehalis, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Pacific Northwest Cookie Company, we make vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free cookies that taste so good you won't believe what's (not) in them! Our customers are thinking about their health and may have food allergies or intolerances but will always enjoy a delicious cookie.

Tell us about yourself

When my brother turned 30, he became intolerant to gluten and dairy. My mom and I wanted to figure out a delicious alternative that he would enjoy. It turned out that there were many others, like my brother looking for a delicious alternative cookie. I started working at a retail food chain when I was 18; I was with that company for 13 years. While I worked my way up through the ranks, I would always hear my direct boss tell me that I cared too much. I always thought that was a negative thing, but when I became an entrepreneur, I realized that I just hadn't found my calling yet. One of my brothers, when he turned 30, became intolerant to dairy and gluten. My business was born because my mom and I wanted to find a delicious alternative that he could enjoy. I am motivated every day by the thought that I can encourage my boys and other younger generations that no matter where you start in life if you're willing to work hard, you can accomplish your dreams in life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The growth in my mindset. Realizing that every "problem" that comes up is actually an opportunity to improve your craft. Failure isn't final unless you decide it will be.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Understanding that critiques aren't personal. It actually is someone being vulnerable enough to share their true thoughts with you. Critiques are actually gifts, but it can be hard not to take them personally.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find mentors- successful people who have already accomplished what you are looking to do. They have already gone through what you will be and will have wisdom that can help avoid painful starting mistakes.
  2. Value relationships- There's a saying: it's not what you know; it's who you know.
  3. Be kind- You never know who you are going to meet in business, and even if you think someone can't help you, they might know someone who can.
