Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaclyn Rosen, Founder of PlantBased Jax, located in Redondo Beach, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a Plant-Based Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach. I work with clients one-on-one to help them find balance by creating healthy habits and incorporating plant-based eating into their daily lives so they can improve their health span with ease and delicious food. I work with men and women over the age of 35 who want to feel good again. Their health goals are usually to lose weight, gain energy, sleep better, and feel more confident about themselves. We focus on healthy habit-building and incorporate more plant-based foods into their daily diet.
Another thing we focus on is the freedom that comes with a balanced lifestyle. Freeing up the mental space that we dedicate to worrying about calories, tight clothes, and a lack of energy is absolutely life-changing. We all deserve to feel at peace with our daily choices, comfortable in our skin, and have freedom around food.
Tell us about yourself
I was a science teacher for 15 years, and now I'm teaching a middle school plant-based cooking class in addition to running my own coaching business. I have dedicated my life to education. I also have a Vegan Lifestyle Coach & Educator certification through Main Street Vegan Academy. I've obtained a Plant-Based Nutrition Certification through T. Colin Campbell's eCornell program, and I'm a Certified Holistic Nutritionist through American Fitness Professionals Association. Currently, I'm in a Clinical Nutrition Master's Program at the University of Bridgeport.
One of the things I always loved about being a teacher was connecting and empowering others with new information. My students were always fascinated by my vegan lifestyle. (I haven't eaten meat in 29 years, and I've been vegan for 9 of those years). I became more and more empowered by my own plant-based journey, and I realized I wanted to focus my knowledge, experience, and expertise outside the classroom and help others one on one. I love helping people find their "why" and guiding them with the necessary steps to gain confidence and experience freedom. My coaching business, PlantBased Jax, was born.
There are two things that motivate me; one wants to share the big secret: it's possible to live a lifestyle that causes no harm to others and is also healthy, easy to follow, and delicious. The second thing is the simple fact that time waits for no one. There is no rewind button, and this is our one chance to experience life. It's time to get it together. Getting older shouldn't mean dragging ourselves through life. We all deserve to face each new day with confidence, peace, and freedom.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I created a product called Plant-Based Blueprints. It's an ingredient-driven meal guide, a type of "cookbook" for people (like me) who don't like following recipes but do love to eat. I dreamed up this idea and then created the blueprints from scratch. I followed my own blueprints to cook all of the featured dishes for the ebook photo shoot. I published and distributed it myself online, with no previous experience, and all while working (teaching & coaching clients) and being in school full time. (I'm currently in a clinical nutrition program at the University of Bridgeport.) It was a lot of work, but I'm proud of myself for pushing through.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Staying on top of technology! There's always a great new email list aggregator, new marketing strategies, updated social media features, algorithm changes, etc. It's exhausting. Actually, staying current and consistent on social media feels like a full-time job on its own.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure it's something you love and feel passionate about. You'll be thinking about it day and night, so make it something that lights you up.
- Invest in yourself to be the expert. Learn everything you can about your field of work. Not only will this build confidence within, but you will also become the go-to person in your industry.
- Be sure to have a support system in place. It's important to have someone close to you, a business mentor or business partner, to whom you can bounce ideas off of, get helpful feedback, or just be able to vent. Do not isolate yourself and get lost in your work. It's easy to do, but it gets overwhelming in the long run.
