Helping Improve Quality of Life - Plant Trainers
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shoshana and Adam Chaim, Founders of Plant Trainers, located in Thornhill, ON, CA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Thirteen years ago, we had a health scare, and it turns out what we thought was a healthy lifestyle was responsible for it. We made changes and want to help others make changes, so young families like us never have to go through what we went through. Now, Health and wellness are on the rise. People are taking control of their health and really want to improve their quality of life. One area that people are going to is plant-based nutrition. At Plant Trainers, we help people improve their quality of life through plant-based nutrition and fitness. Whether people listen to our bi-weekly podcast, follow our recipes online, or get informed through our various social media outlets, people are reducing inflammation, losing weight, but most importantly -feeling better and enjoying life. They especially love when we give them free consults and learn about the other tools we work with to improve their health.
Tell us about yourself
We first started our business as a hobby. A way for two parents to spend time together after a traumatic health scare. 13 years ago, Adam was told he had a tumor on his kidney and heart disease, and I might be left to raise the kids on her own. Not willing to take that as our future, Adam began researching how to prevent his heart disease from worsening or how to reverse it completely. That’s when he found a plant-based diet. Within one year of being retested, he discovered that his tumor had shrunk on its own, and the heart disease was completely gone. That’s when we knew we had a responsibility to share this information with the world. As Phys Ed teachers and personal trainers, we got nutrition certification and began helping people with their lifestyles. Now we have a fully plant-based house with two teenagers who are responsible for their food choices.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment is not what we have done but more about what our clients, podcast listeners, and social media followers have accomplished. It’s amazing to see how people are taking control of their own lives, changing daily habits so that they can improve their quality of life, their longevity, and really be able to achieve life’s goals because they just feel better. It’s wonderful to know that while they’re doing all of this, it is also having a huge impact on the environment. If you want to know what our biggest accomplishment is, it’s taking that chance and putting ourselves out there and sharing our story with the world so that we can help other people.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Finding work-life balance is no easy task when you’re an entrepreneur. We help people stay motivated for their health by reducing stress and finding time for self-care. That can’t be more important when you work for yourself as there is no such thing as a punch clock in your business. We use exercise, meditation, family time, supplements, and more tools to be our healthiest selves while helping other people be healthy. Sometimes we wish we could do a little bit better, but reflection is key.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
For anybody looking to start a business, it’s important to know your vision and create a plan to get there. That’s more important than jumping in and starting to do the work. Slow and steady is important. Consistency will get you there, so make sure you are being consistent with your work, what you’re putting out into the public, and what you’re putting into the universe. And finally, it’s important to seek the support of your friends and family. Not everybody is going to support you financially. But there are other ways to show their support. They can help make different connections or even just wish you good luck. All of that goes a long way.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Your business will morph over the years. You are going to grow as an entrepreneur and as an individual. You will learn who your clients are, what they need, and what your true super talents are to help others. Never look at closing one chapter as a failure but look at it as a building block toward the future. We never knew that we would be in the top 1% of a podcast, have a number one best-selling book, or be able to leave one of our day jobs. Those are some of the achievements we have gained through consistent effort and flexibility. I wish you all luck in the future.
