Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Caroline D'Amore, Founder of Pizza Girl, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Pizza Girl organic pasta sauce. We are the only brand that ticks all the boxes. Organic, No Sugar added, EVOO, Woman-owned, and incredibly delicious.

Tell us about yourself

I earned the moniker Pizza Girl growing up in the D'Amore's Pizza shops in SoCal. When I became a mom, I needed something healthy to aid me in making dinner so I'd feel good about feeding my child. I couldn't find one sauce that actually tasted homemade. No weird aftertaste, and truly clean and fresh. So I made one. I started in my kitchen, and now Pizza Girl can be found in 700 stores in Socal and growing. We are in Wholefoods, Gelsons, Bristol Farms, and Erewhon and can also be purchased online at pizzagirl.com. When you buy a 6-pack, you get free shipping!!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far would be launching and staying in business on minimal funds and making it work, all while growing organically.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part is never knowing when your next paycheck will come. It's extremely scary at times when you put all you have into your business. You have to believe so hard and fight every single day to make it work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be willing to suffer for your dream. If you don't have a high tolerance for the word NO, then don't become an entrepreneur.
  2. Obsess over your product. You can have all the marketing dollars behind you, but if your product doesn't back up your claims, you will eventually run out of capital and lose it all.
  3. Be willing to do the hard work. Grassroots marketing still works. You have to be willing to stand at grocery stores, give out samples, and always say yes to any good marketing opportunity that comes your way.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Pizza Girl is my dream. Anyone who tastes Pizza girl can tell it comes from the heart, a long line of Italian cooks, and a hardworking mom who truly cares about these sauces and the people who are enjoying them.
