Communicate What Words Cannot Say - Pistil Flowers

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yvonne Yang, owner of Pistil Flowers, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a contemporary floral business located in the heart of Toronto, connecting people through all life occasions and milestones through the beauty of flowers.

Currently operating three retail locations in the bustling financial district as well as the iconic shopping district of Bay and Bloor, we strive to provide a unique experience for our customers upon every visit, every workshop, and every order we create.

Tell us about yourself

After pursuing a career in costume design and interior design, I was introduced to flowers purely by chance. I fell in love with this medium right away. As a Designer, first, flowers have a unique and powerful ability to provide a human connection to nature and force me as a designer to recognize and showcase the ever-changing nature of this medium, from the changing seasons to appreciate the life cycle of each flower. Being able to bring joy and creativity through what nature has already provided is simply my greatest motivation and inspiration.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment as a business owner is leadership. I am the biggest advocate that no one person alone can make anything grow, especially in business. I absolutely love seeing my team grow within the company and believe collectively we make the business better.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Well, like any business, unexpected challenges are always the hardest. I think expecting the unexpected and the ability to be flexible is the most difficult but most necessary in business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Really identify and accept your strengths and weaknesses.
  2. Delegate and empower others to help grow your business. You cant do everything yourself.
  3. Customer service and customer experience is the essential ingredient in this business. Make this a focus.
