Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Piper Phillips, a Marketing Strategist, Consultant, and Business Influencer based in New York City, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Hi! I'm Piper Phillips, a TikTok content creator, and Director of Marketing for Tru.
There is some overlap between my social media following and our customers at Tru! On TikTok, most of my content is geared towards women who have high career ambitions, are looking to improve their confidence, or just like hearing about life in NYC!
At Tru, we make enhanced sparkling water with wellness benefits. Each of our drinks has zero sugar, tastes great, and helps you perform your best, whether it's TruEnergy in the morning, TruDream before bed, or TruBeauty when you're doing your skincare routine.
Because we have so many different kinds of drinks, our target market is broad. However, we do know that most of our customers are female, and all of them love finding easy ways to live healthier lives!
Tell us about yourself
I'm half-German, originally from Chicago, went to Indiana University, and now live in NYC. I feel like these locations, and the people in them helped shape my personality a great deal. People would definitely call me a warm and bubbly person (the midwest in me), but I know I'm determined with huge dreams and will stop at nothing to see them through.
My #1 driver is connection. I love connecting with people. That's my favorite part of my job at Tru, talking to our customers, meeting them at events, and getting my friends hooked on our drinks.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'm really proud of the community I've built. The best part is when I get emails from people telling me that I helped them network and get their job or internship etc. Knowing that I'm able to share my story and inspire younger girls in high school or college is an awesome feeling.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
For me, my business is Piper Phillips, my personal brand. That makes it difficult because there is literally no separation of self and business. That requires a thick skin because you can't get in the habit of intertwining yourself with how your business is doing.
With Tru, I feel the same way. Even though I am not a founder, I feel intense loyalty to the brand and want to see it succeed.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Figure out a personal brand that feels right to you, something you want to be known for.
- Get mentors in different industries and professions to learn from.
- Work on your limiting beliefs and retrain your brain to realize you can do anything.
