What's your organization, and who are your members?

We are a nonprofit organization based in Guatemala. We provide data and consultancy services to those seeking information on the nonprofit sector.

Tell us about yourself

I have been working in the nonprofit sector since 2007, and I was inspired to start Pionero Philanthropy because I had worked in many contrasting organizations - the good, the bad, and the ugly. I found the lack of transparency in the sector (especially in developing countries) and the visibility imbalance between large and small organizations very distressing.

I wanted to redress this balance and create a mechanism to champion small organizations doing fantastic work in their communities and give them more visibility and credibility in a very crowded sector. I also wanted to help donors and information seekers to find the most impactful organizations that match their criteria.

What's your biggest accomplishment as an organization?

Matching individuals or organizations to deserving nonprofits and seeing how the support received makes a tangible difference in Guatemalan communities.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being an organization?

The mental strength to keep going and believing in your mission even when results aren't forthcoming and when you feel you are fighting alone.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow an organization today?

  1. Do a detailed business plan and market research.
  2. Get some supportive allies.
  3. Ensure you are passionate about the project and willing to put in years of sacrifice, blood, sweat, and tears to make your dream a reality.
