What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am an agent for wellness. I help people reach their wellness goals through chiropractic care. I also offer a line of all-natural homemade skincare products through my Dr. Lauren N Penn brand. We have other products such as essential oils and much more.
Tell us about yourself
What got me started in this business of wellness is a combination of things. One, I was already working in hospital operating rooms in surgery, changing people's lives. Then one day, I visited an apothecary in Denver, and I knew instantly that's what I wanted to do - to own and manage a store. This apothecary had herbs, raw products, tinctures, self-help books, and an array of ways a person could help heal their body with the right knowledge, resources, and tools. That turned into starting a skincare line to help my son with eczema.
That morphed into a self-study of herbs, essential oils, and, finally, chiropractic school. My practice, PinPoint Chiropractic, kind of specializes in helping people better their health outcomes when they've tried everything else and not gotten good results. Often I find I am their last hope...and that's what gets me up in the morning to do what I do...
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Honestly, my first biggest accomplishment was simply starting the business. I moved to Colorado Springs in 2019 with the understanding that I had been hired as a chiropractor in an existing office. But the 1st day I got here, I learned that they no longer needed me, so suddenly I had NO job and no income. So I was forced - thankfully - to leap into starting up my own practice! Since then, Pinpoint Chiropractic has grown, and I have had to move three times in the last three years to accommodate that growth.
As I've grown, I have also expanded my wellness offerings to include skincare/beauty products, nutritional packs, telemedicine, and multi-disciplinary practitioners in my office. My practice also sponsors a program to feed the homeless in my community - once a month, we make 250+ sack lunches that we then donate to the Salvation Army. Finally, I recently launched a podcast called "A Well-Lived Life," where I interview interesting people from around the world to bring perspective on what wellness looks like.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is to have the ability to stay consistently positive in the face of adversity and to be able and willing to quickly pivot and reinvent your business when called for. Keeping your eyes on the prize and not being side-tracked by the chaos and negativity around you. My practice has grown & prospered through a worldwide pandemic and now a recession.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My first piece of advice is to stop thinking and start doing it!! Just start. There is power in action. Secondly, I would recommend that you focus on networking and building strong relationships with everyone you can.
Some of these people will become your customers, some will be your allies & business mentors, and hopefully, most of them will become your friends.
My last tip is to build systems into your business as quickly as you can. Systems allow you to scale and grow. Systems allow you to get to the point that you are working ON the business, and not just IN the business!!
