Helping Children Reach Their TRUE Potential - Dr. Aimee Piller
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Aimee Piller, Founder and Owner of Piller Child Development, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a pediatric therapy company that offers occupational and speech therapy services to children ages birth to 21 who have developmental or rehabilitative needs. Some clients we serve include children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, sensory processing disorder, and other developmental delays.
Tell us about yourself
I love spending time with the children and families. Often, we are the first professional a parent will meet on their journey as a parent of a child with special needs. It is always fulfilling to reassure them that their child is amazing and we are going to help them be as amazing as they can be. And, of course, I love working with the kids. To see them learn a new skill or do something they never thought they could do... and knowing you had a part in that is why I do what I do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to change with the times. Healthcare is constantly changing and has changed a lot in the last two years. During this tumultuous time, I was able to see ahead to what may happen and make quick changes to keep everyone employed, and all of our children and families served.
We made the switch from no telehealth to having all therapists trained, our EMR system set, and the technology in place in less than 72 hours. As a result, we kept everyone employed and did not cut hours during even the height of Covid.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is to not take things personally and always keep the health of the business at the forefront of every decision. Not everyone is going to agree with your decisions or the way you are taking the company. I have to remember that it is not about me. I have to always think about what is best for the business. If the business isn't healthy and running efficiently, children are not able to receive much-needed therapy, and people do not have jobs. Sometimes those decisions are hard to make.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be flexible. Don't get stuck in one way of doing things. Try something. If it works great, continue it. If not, don't be afraid to let it go and move on.
- Have a support system. Running a business takes long hours, lots of work, and little appreciation. Find someone that supports you. Someone that can be honest with you but also helps you solve problems.
- Take care of yourself. Find a balance that works for you, so you do not burn out. The company will take its energy from the leader. Make sure you have the energy to give.
