Tell us about yourself
When I launched Piece of Cake Moving & Storage, I was just 24 at the time, although I had always wanted to set up my own company since I was a boy. I started Piece of Cake for two key reasons: First, I saw gaps in an old and traditional industry, and I had my own ideas on how we could do a better job in delivering a happier moving experience. Second, I wanted to create a workplace where our people smiled. An environment that supports people through their life's ups and downs. Six years later, not much has changed - there are still tons of opportunities for the business to grow within the industry, and we have a team of people who inspire the business and me to think and act big.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a work environment where our employees love coming to work. Within six short years, we have managed to grow our team to 300+ with a minimal churn rate. Within the company, we emphasize integrity, curiosity, and a can-do attitude, and that's reflected in the level of service we're able to provide our clients.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Prioritizing business initiatives so that you're setting goals for both short and long-term wins. Constantly identifying the right people to take more responsibility so that they can lead their team and function of the business - which also brings great satisfaction to see your leaders and team grow, but also frightening as you have to let go of being in control. Even if you hire the right people you trust, you still have to be up-to-speed on all parts of the business, even if you are not working on the details.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Set your "wildest dream" goal. Don't limit yourself by setting a goal that is reachable. Set a goal that only in your wildest dreams do you think it's possible, and then work towards it, no matter how crazy it is. Nothing bad is going to happen if you don't get it; in fact, you'll likely end up well surpassing the reachable mark you first had in your mind.
- Share the success. Once you are on track for success in your business, share it with your closest members of the team. Make sure everyone is always getting a piece of the cake because your first starters are those leaders and employees who will help you achieve your vision. Pay well, provide opportunities for further education, and call out amazing work. Your team needs to feel seen and appreciated.
- Put emphasis on integrity. Integrity over skill. Surround yourself with people who will have your back in the good and bad times. Integrity is the one non-negotiable when you are hiring, and you can't compromise on it.
