Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nick Sanders, Director of PHYT For Function, located in Cleveland, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a manual therapy clinic that helps active adults and athletes resolve injuries and muscle, joint, and nerve pain problems with hands-on treatments, dry needling, and exercise progression.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up around sports and was injured often enough to think I wanted to get into physical therapy. As I progressed through my career, I found myself interested in both the training and sports aspect as well as injury rehab. I recognized there's a big need for the middle ground for people not performing their best and unable to reach their capacity because of a small pain problem, mobility, or strength limitation. I also realized the traditional medical model was not set up to be able to serve those clients. So I started PHYT For Function to have the ability to treat people one on one and focus on their goals without the limitations set in place by insurance companies and big system rehab. I am motivated each day by my clients and work to do what I can to help them reach their goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the development of our team. I still remember the first client who called me a magician in the clinic. I helped her with some low back and sacroiliac pain. Now I get to see clients call our other clinicians magicians, and it's a really cool feeling. It's awesome to see our business grow and be able to help and reach more people in need of our services.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me as a business owner is navigating time management and prioritizing what needs to be done. There is a feeling that there is always something that needs to be done, and managing what to do when is a constant challenge for me, especially when you layer in wanting to spend time with your friends and family.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three times I'd give anyone looking to start a company is to build something that is viscerally important to you. It is going to be a lot of hard work, more than you think, so understand why you are building it. Second, I would say build a system that is also going to meet your life goals. How is this plan going to serve what you want out of life, family, personal goals as well as business? Third, I would say just keep executing. It is easy to get distracted, overwhelmed, or frustrated, but as long as you keep moving, things get better and continue to progress!
