17 Years of Experience - Physio Francis Zavala

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Francis Zavala, founder of Physio Francis Zavala, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a self-employed physiotherapist working under my own banner as Physio Francis Zavala. The establishments where I work are a medical clinic and a wellness clinic. Being at the medical clinic lets me help increase awareness among the doctors and their patients of the vast array of medical conditions and physical impairments that physiotherapy can address. Working at the wellness clinic provides clients with a wider gamut of treatment options for their pain and various ailments.

Tell us about yourself

My main impetus to set out on my own was my desire to find a different way to practice my profession according to my personal preferences and how I believe the public should receive physiotherapy services. My hybrid introverted-extroverted personality is congruous with my love of interacting with people from different walks of life on a one-on-one basis. Treating clients with a more private approach allows for more attention to detail and thus more personalized and effective care. I constantly crave new clinical knowledge, and I am always driven to find the best ways to help my clients achieve their goals, both of which also motivates me to do my job every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel that one of my biggest accomplishments as a self-employed healthcare practitioner is having acquired the trust of numerous clients, doctors, and coworkers, past and present, particularly with complex clinical cases.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult aspects of being a business owner is gauging the probability of success and satisfaction attached to more significant decisions. An example is predicting the likelihood of building an adequate volume of clientele when branching out to another location. Balancing the monetary profits that can be gained with the probable degree of long-term satisfaction associated with a specific setting can also pose a challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Being cognizant of your strengths is essential to maintaining a business. Your talents do not have to be unique, but it is important to be confident that you have a competitive edge. Knowing your limitations is the complementary side to this equation. You need to have a clear idea of what you want to avoid. For example, you need to be able to set boundaries around your schedule so you can prevent burnout.
  2. Passion is a key sustaining element when undertaking a business on your own. Loving the core parts of your job will aid you in withstanding the less pleasant aspects.
  3. Marketing your skillset online and in-person is a powerful driver for expanding your network and, thus, your business. Your clients and your coworkers are an excellent base for growth.
