Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Lee, founder of Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, located in Great Barrington, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Training for professional yoga therapists. The practices of yoga and meditation are now both widely held as means toward a more emotionally balanced and fulfilling life. For 37 years now, my wife Lori and I have run the Phoenix Rising School of Yoga Therapy. We have trained over 3000 yoga therapists who, through their private practices, support others in greater emotional and mental well-being using a body/mind approach.

Tell us about yourself

Every day I wake up, I want to live my day in a way that makes a difference. How can I personally find joy and fulfillment in this precious day, and how can I help others do the same and make the world a better place? I also love to teach, and so I do both. I practice, and I teach the things in life that are most important to me - finding peace amid the chaos and engaging in the process of transformation as a great way to engage in life and become a human being who can make a difference in your own life and the lives of others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The volume of testimonials from past students and their clients know that our work has made a difference. Also that many other professionals have also learned in our direction in their work. I think it's fair to say we've been through leaders and practice leaders in our field.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Adapting to an ever-changing and rapidly changing world. But while this is sometimes difficult is also necessary and can be fulfilling.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do something you are passionate about.
  2. Do it well.
  3. Learn how to be flexible by growing and learning yourself and never stopping, so you are able to adapt to change when you need to.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Hang in when the going gets tough, and be open to what tough times might bring you. Everything always changes, and nothing is permanent. Go with that understanding regardless of how comfortable you might get.
