Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robin Thomas, founder of Phoenix Rising Healings, located in Marlborough, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a happiness coach, healer, and spiritual teacher. I specialize in helping people, specifically women who have spent their lives as chronic people-pleaser. I help them learn how to shut off the anxiety of "not-good-enough" that keeps them feeling stuck, lost, and searching. My clients go from longing for more intimacy, passion, and joy to living and choosing to be fiercely happy, even if they don't know or remember what that looks like yet.
Tell us about yourself
I have always been a teacher and a healer, even when I didn't have the tools or know-how. When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to be a doctor or therapist. I got a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy and a master's degree in counseling, so I could do both. As an adult, I've spent the better part of the last 20+ years seeking teachers, healers, gurus, and therapists trying to figure out what was wrong with me. When I finally realized that there was nothing wrong with me and I could access the inner knowing of peace inside me, of being comfortable in my own skin, I knew that I needed to teach this to others. I've always known it was my mission to heal and save the world. Once I figured out how to access and shine my own light, I finally understood how I would accomplish that mission— teaching others to access and find theirs. I just know this is how we heal the planet.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have had my business as a side-gig for about ten years while I worked a regular job in healthcare. During the pandemic, when my clinic was shut down, and I could no longer rely on that, I made the decision to take a leap of faith and focus exclusively on my business as my primary source of income. To date, my biggest accomplishments as a business owner are the epic failure I had the first time I tried this several years ago
and now, the fact that I have successfully supported myself and my daughter for the last two years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'm such a social, extroverted person that one of the hardest things is doing so much of the work alone. I've been increasing my networking circles and participating in co-working groups and masterminds to have a group of people with whom to brainstorm. My ideal business model has a team working collaboratively for a greater goal.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Get a mentor and a coach. Hire people who know more than you do to help you on your path. A mentor to help you identify your first and then your next steps. A coach to help you see your blind spots and limiting beliefs and then challenge them in you. Once you have the wherewithal and ability, work with people who have passion for and excel at the things you aren't good at. It'll leave you with more time, energy, and bandwidth for the stuff you are passionate about.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I was re-listening to an old Caroline Myss book the other day, and she was talking about having the courage to follow the whisperings of our hearts. When the heart says it's time to leave a situation, do it. When it says it's time to create this thing, create it. When it tells you it's time to take the leap of faith, dive headfirst into the abyss. I promise you, the view is breathtaking.
