Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alexandra Moore, Customer Happiness Manager of Philosockphy, located in Toronto, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

PHILOSOCKPHY is a fashion socks company with the mission of bringing versatile designs for everyday wear at the most affordable prices while making a positive impact on the sustainability of our environment and the well-being of our community. Not an easy job to combine all three elements of our mission in one product. But somehow, through dedication, hard work, and a lot of help from Lady Luck, that is what we have done.

Tell us about yourself

Johnny, one of the founders of PHILOSOCKPHY, is a serial entrepreneur wanting to create a company that would make people look good and do good for their community. After thinking long and hard, he figured out how he could provide value to a business. Unfortunately for him, being fashion-savvy was not one of his strengths. He partnered with his creative fashion counterpart, Ariel, and together they came up with the idea of designing and selling socks. They noticed that even though there was a demand for colorful socks, the quality and selection in the market were not very high. Therefore, PHILOSOCKPHY was officially created in December 2015.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When we embarked on our socks journey, one of our many aims was to create a product that would give back to our community. In the U.S., we partnered with Philadelphia's People's Emergency Center (PEC), whose mission is to nurture families, strengthen neighborhoods and drive change. For homeless women with children and parenting youth, PEC offers more than 235 affordable housing units, job training, parenting and early childhood education, financial education and planning, life skills, and technology coursework. PEC seeks to change the life trajectory of the families who seek its services and inspire them to achieve housing security and financial stability. In Canada, we partnered up with Brands For Canada, a charity organization that aims to create a world where goods are purposefully used to eliminate poverty and inequality. PHILOSOCKPHY decided to donate part of our profits, in addition to surplus inventory, to Brands For Canada. When you wear a pair of Philosockphy, you are wearing the love we all have for our community and taking part in giving back. This is why we are fondly referred to as PHILOSOCKPHY, the socks with a heart!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is keeping track of all the day-to-day things that need to occur in order for our business to be successful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it!
