What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is PHD Studios, and my customers are people who need effective, clean website design and development, specifically in Webflow.
Tell us about yourself
I started freelancing on the side as a graphic designer over 10 years ago. Then in January 2020, I jumped to full-time freelance. Over the last few years, I've worked on various logo, marketing, and website projects; however, I recently switched to focus primarily on Webflow design and development. Simply put, I'm a web designer and developer who is enthusiastic about clean design, effective solutions, and, most importantly—helping others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to steadily grow my business year over year, all while narrowing my focus to work on projects I'm most excited about.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I work with a large variety of clients, which is good and hard. I enjoy the variety it brings, but it can also be challenging jumping from one client/project to another. Sometimes I feel like it would be easier to have a "normal" job where I clock in and out for one company at set times. But then I remember the flexibility, freedom, and choice I have working for myself, and I wouldn't trade that for anything!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do good work.
- Pay attention to the details.
- Say yes a lot.
- If you feel overwhelmed by too much work, either start saying no or just double your rates (man, that was a long bullet point).
- Learn a lot about your type of work.
- Be your own client.
