Take a Moment to Breathe - Phases Candle Co.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Napthen, Owner of Phases Candle Co., located in Warren, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a Candle Business specializing in handcrafted Soy Wax Candles and Wax Melts, as well as Bath Bombs, Whipped Soap, and Body Butter. Our customers are busy individuals who are constantly on the go.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Stephanie, and I'm the owner of Phases Candle Co. I've always been artistic and love creating. For a while, I took a break from the artistic side to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. At the beginning of the pandemic, I started tapping back into my creative side. I went through a period of self-reflection, and I started meditating. I was burning these White Sage candles, and they smelled amazing. One day, I thought to myself that I would be using these all the time, so I might as well make them myself. I poured my first candle, and something clicked; I realized that that's what I want to do with the rest of my life. Immediately after, I made my Bath Bombs, and Whipped Soap & Body Butter followed right after.

What motivates me is that there are endless possibilities on what I can make. There are so many scents, sizes, and ingredients. It really is a science, and I enjoy testing and finding out what does/doesn't work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've always wanted to do something where I can help other people. The idea behind the Phases brand is that no matter what you're going through, it's only temporary - it's "just a phase." I truly believe that my products help my customers breathe out their stress for even just a moment. I think that it is really important to relax so you can be in the present moment. It's such an amazing feeling when people tell me that they had a bad day, but one of my products helped them end their day on a good note.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is doing almost everything by myself. It never feels like your work is done - because it never is! When you're creative, you tend to be a perfectionist, which is why it's important to give yourself a break. Thankfully, I have an amazing support system with my partner, friends, and family. They will always help if needed. It can be exhausting but so rewarding!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you want to start a business, I say go for it! I think it's super important to step out of our comfort zones and do something we've never done before. You may not end up sticking with it, but it's worth a shot!
  2. Take good care of yourself. You will have many trials and tribulations but also many wins. It's important to also celebrate your wins before moving on to your next goal. What you're doing is not easy, so cut yourself some slack.
  3. Be patient! This can be such a hard but important lesson. Allow yourself the time and space to grow. You WILL get there, but nothing good ever comes from rushing things. Success doesn't come right away; you have to earn it. It's not easy, but it is possible.
