Funny and Amazing Scented Candles - Petty Candle
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joy Bell, owner of Petty Candle Co, located in Dallas, Texas, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Petty Candle Co, a small, black woman-owned business based in Dallas, TX. My customers are people that love a high-quality, uniquely scented candle but also don't take themselves too seriously!
Tell us about yourself
I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and have had several small hustles but never took them seriously. Then, in the spring of 2019, I was laid off.
One day, I felt sorry for myself and tried to convince my boyfriend to buy a few candles for me, and he said, "Babe, instead of spending money on them, why don't you learn how to make your own?". A lightbulb went off, and I took that idea and hit the ground running!
It took many months of research and trial and error -heavy on the error! My first candle smelled like a ham sandwich- before I finally had a line of products that I was proud to share with the world.
It's not easy running a business, but my customers keep me motivated. There are many moments of doubt and fear but seeing people laugh and smile when they see my candles makes it worthwhile for me!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment thus far has been being featured in both Glamour and Cosmopolitan magazines!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Staying focused and encouraged can be challenging. There are days when I question whether or not I have what it takes to be a successful business owner. Then I remember why I started making candles in the first place and my fabulous customers, and it helps me refocus.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just start. Everything doesn't have to be perfect! And trust me, as you grow and learn, there are many things you will have to adjust to on your entrepreneurial journey. But getting past the fear and getting started is more than half the battle.
2. Don't be afraid to ask for help! Sometimes, people are scared to seek out mentors. There are so many incredible communities of people who love to share their knowledge and help budding entrepreneurs.
3. Don't be afraid to start over. It's ok to scrap a product or rebrand, nothing is set in stone, and you're not a failure if you go back to the drawing board.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
If you stay petty, you don't have to get petty!
