Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dawn Petter, Owner of Petalune Herbals, located in New York, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a clinically trained herbalist and flower essence practitioner, and my business has a few different facets. I am a practitioner, working with clients one on one to support optimal health with the use of plant medicine. I am an educator and offer workshops around the country at corporations and institutions, and lastly, I have an online business that retails my handmade organic and herbal skincare.
Tell us about yourself
I started my career in NYC as a sweater designer. I had my own cashmere line, Petalune, and freelanced as a designer for 20 years. During that time, I also studied yoga and various healing practices and discovered a love for the outdoors. Eventually, all these studies converged, and I found myself studying herbal medicine and flower essences. The transition happened over many years, but looking back on it all, this path that felt so unplanned and accidental was perfect. Each skill I learned prepared me for everything I now offer to my clients and for my brand.
My motivation is to create transformative experiences for my clients, be it through a cream that smells calming, and feels silky on the skin, or a class where students taste, touch and smell herbs that delight the senses, to working with a client and shifting their well being to a more optimal place. It's the reason I love what I do, as essentially, it's about making a difference.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Not giving up, and being consistent with my offerings, even in the face of the ever-evolving challenges of the last three years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
There never seems to be enough time to get it all done!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be clear about your goals.
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
- Make sure you have a good support system.
