Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in finance but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Zinnia Adams, Founder of Perspectives, located in Chicago, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Perspectives is a personal finance education brand taking women from struggling and stressed to empowered about money so they can achieve financial stability. My customers are high-achieving, established women who never received personal finance education. They usually don't have control over their finances and get in the habit of just swiping when it's due but don't really have a handle on it. They miss out on trips or other fun activities many times because they just don't have the funds despite having a decent income. They are ready to improve their finances and need some guidance and education to help them make their financial goals a reality.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a 39-year-old lifetime Chicago resident. I group up the third child to a 17-year-old single parent. As you can imagine, she spent a lot of time working extremely hard to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. As a result, I didn't learn much about managing money. After becoming a single mother at 17, I experienced my own issues. I mismanaged money and maxed out credit cards; I just didn't make it a priority. I've committed just about every financial mistake you could imagine. I finally took the time and put effort into really learning myself and about money to reach my financial goals. After self-correction, I purchased my first home at the age of 27, paid my way through Undergrad, paid off $50K in consumer debt, and became a Real Estate Investor.
Now I'm a 2x author, Financial Empowerment Speaker and Educator, and Certified Financial Education Instructor on a mission to use my knowledge and experience to help others achieve financial stability.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has to be the impact on the community. I enjoy partnering with organizations to bring financial education to the community. I love when my students share their wins and crush their financial goals.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Time Management and having to work on your to-do list when all you really want to do is rest. It takes for you to be really committed and passionate about what you do so that you can forge through even on the days you feel like giving up.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Focus on income-generating activities.
- Separate your personal and business finances (completely).
- Don't run out and buy a logo design, business cards, and all of those fancy things based on your first idea.
