Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jonathan Klee, Founder of Perception Funding Inc., located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Perception Funding is a non-profit organization that partners with other non-profits to help them raise funds and develop their mission. In short, we help non-profits all over the world have sustainable growth. So far, we have donated over $16 Million and plan to provide an additional $5 Million to our non-profit partners for the 2023 project.

Tell us about yourself

I had worked for a non-profit just out of college. I watched so many people in the non-profit world quit because of the lack of funding or support, or I watched them struggle and get dragged through the mud for years, not meeting the needs of those they serve until they finally quit. What motivates me now is seeing our partnering non-profits impacting the lives of those they serve while continuing to grow their mission each and every year.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

www.givetransform.org is our biggest accomplishment! This is our online giving platform that covers every way a donor can possibly give - credit card, debit card, PayPal, eCheck, text giving, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, cars, boats, motorcycles, and business inventory. We're ready to accept all forms of giving and liquidate it to fund worthy causes.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

We work and fund a lot of non-profits in 3rd world countries. The needs and situations they are in are wild and seemingly insurmountable. It's hard on all of our operational team members to see the level of poverty people live in and try to give them hope for how we can help. The change and help we can offer are long-term, it's a slow road, and many give up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Go slow; you'll only mess things up if you're in a big hurry. All good things take time. We often get in a rush because we compare ourselves to others, but we don't worry about what others have done.
  2. You need a team! We aren't meant to do things alone; we all need people around us with different skill sets who can also share in the bad days and celebrate the wins.
  3. You don't need debit for something to grow. So many businesses get hung up or can't start because they can't get a loan to start. There's always a next step; there's always something you can do to get started.
