Hit Your Big Financial Goals - Pennies Not Perfection
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mary Hobbs, Founder of Pennies Not Perfection, located in Memphis, TN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help people manage money through paper budgeting and visual tracking. Getting organized and using visual tools can help a lot of people get off the financial panic cycle and build a strong foundation. I create videos and printables that help people achieve this.
Tell us about yourself
I started paying off debt a few years ago and decided to document the process on YouTube. No one around me ever talked about money, and that led me to make many money mistakes. I wanted to share my experience cleaning up those mistakes and becoming good with money. Sharing my story and encouraging others has been extremely rewarding.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every single time I get a comment from someone that has paid off their debt or started a Roth IRA or achieved a big financial goal, it feels like my biggest accomplishment. I keep screenshots of these comments as a reminder of the actual people I'm helping through this business.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me is feeling like I'm not doing enough due to time. I've scaled back some goals while my kids are young, but it's hard to admit that everything on my business to-do list won't be accomplished asap.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Focus on WHY you want to help the people your business will be helping. Having a big reason why can get you through the ups and downs and hard times.
- Record the wins, however big or small they may be. You might not always achieve every goal you set, but recording your wins can help you see how far you've come. Maybe it's positive reviews, testimonials, or successful product launches - whatever wins you've had, add it to the list that you can review when you need a boost.
- Find or create a mastermind. Having a group that met biweekly through the start and growth of my business truly helped me stay focused on where to spend my energy. Reach out to people growing a business at the same time as you because you'll need that camaraderie.
