Prioritize Your Pelvic Health - Pelvic Therapy NYC
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katherine Malfucci, Founder of Pelvic Therapy NYC, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a pelvic floor therapist at Pelvic Therapy NYC. I work with individuals who want to heal symptoms of pain or discomfort in their pelvic floor and inner core region or those who are looking to strengthen and lengthen muscles to better prepare their bodies for future endeavors. As a pelvic floor occupational therapist, I focus on what activities my client wants to be able to do. We look at patterns of daily living to help everyday life be more comfortable. This way, we learn about what might have caused the symptoms and what modifications we can make so that they don't return. I work with clients in their own homes, in my home office, or via telehealth. I also provide pelvic floor group workshops as well as private and small group yoga health.
Tell us about yourself
As an occupational therapist, my goal is to make my clients' lives easier and more functional. Since I was a young child, I knew I wanted to work in the helping field. I find joy in supporting others and in the community. Often, the subject matter and issues related to pelvic floor dysfunction are taboo and stigmatized and, therefore, difficult to talk about. I am motivated to do what I do each day to break down those barriers and make people feel comfortable in their own skin.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment actually happens all the time. It's that special moment after I have a complimentary consultation call with a potential client when that person decides to work with me. Having a candid, supportive conversation with someone about my services and giving them the opportunity to tell me how they feel without judgment is already a win. I love to provide an environment where a client knows that we will be a team and work together to address symptoms and move along the healing journey.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is knowing when to turn off work and turn on rest and relaxation. It feels like there is always more I can do, and I have to trust myself that I have done enough; for now, I've worked hard, and it will pay off.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a seasoned individual in the same industry that can be a sounding board and provide insight so you don't have to reinvent the wheel.
- Trust yourself to think outside the box and not follow along with everything you have heard or seen before. Your ideas and instincts are valuable and will make you stand out.
- Give back. When someone is looking to get started, offer to answer their questions. Be there for others the same way that people have helped you along the way. It will help them and also help you to understand yourself more.
