Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Craig Follett, co-founder, and CEO of Peggy Inc., located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Peggy welcomes everyone to experience and collect art, an intentional choice to make the art world more inclusive. That means that our customers (collectors!) span from the art-curious to the art-expert. We embrace both equally.

Tell us about yourself

Art has always been part of my life. During my engineering degree, I studied studio art as my elective. As a child, I received a "Visual Art Award" when graduating from elementary school. After exiting my last venture, I wanted to bring my learnings and successes from that into something I'm passionate about. Art was a natural fit. On top of being motivated to create change in the art world, I'm motivated each day by my great team.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Providing royalties to artists. 100%. This is an area that has been critically overlooked in the art world in North America, one of the few industries that do not currently offer artist royalties. Peggy remedies this—automatically providing royalties on every single secondary sale.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

There are a lot of great opportunities presented to us. Given the vast quantity of opportunities, the hardest thing is prioritizing them. There's so much that we can do!.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Stay strong, and pace yourself.
  2. Choose something you're passionate about. That passion will shine through in everything you do and is impossible to fake.
  3. Work with great people! It's the people that establish a company's success.
