Simply Clean Teeth - Pearly Whites For Pets
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Renata Szekely, owner of Pearly Whites For Pets, located in Barrie, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Pearly Whites For Pets. We are a pet teeth cleaning company servicing the Greater Toronto Area and several other communities outside of the city. The Studio on King is our base and has everything PWFP can offer: a team with exceptional work ethic, outstanding client care, a friendly atmosphere, and a loving attitude in a contemporary environment with a touch of luxury.
Our clients are proactive pet parents interested in and dedicated to their pets' health and well-being. With our services, we aim to be partners on their journey and help them along the way with their pets' oral hygiene needs.
Tell us about yourself
I am blessed with the ability, will, and drive to think outside of the box, which served me well from an early age. I've been running my own business for a couple of decades now. My love for animals, my acquired skills, and my entrepreneurial spirit have created the space for Pearly Whites for Pets. Many years ago, working with pet parents and listening to their worries, needs, and wishes as a groomer, I recognized the need for an alternative, natural way to deal with our pets' teeth, oral health, and dental needs.
A friend of mine, who I will always be grateful for, brought my attention to the concept of anesthesia-free teeth cleaning. Until about ten years ago, pet owners had to subject their animals to anesthesia and drugs for dental and oral hygiene procedures. This provided a lot of barriers for various reasons. Without going into details, a couple of pioneers, including myself, opened up new possibilities and made drug, sedation, and anesthesia-free teeth cleaning available for Ontarians.
For the longest time, the smile on my client's face, a heartfelt thank-you, or a dog's or cat's affection made my day. Recently, I was able to add the small businesses we partner with, my staff, and the ability to be able to share all this with others to the list of my greatest joys.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have reached many milestones. They all stand for meaningful triumphs and learnings I greatly treasure. However, my biggest accomplishment, and the one that I'm most proud of, is that I never gave up on myself and the things I strongly believed in.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I have come to learn that challenges always turn into teachings and learnings. As a business owner, I understand that neither the business nor its leader can grow without them. Overcoming trials and finding new ways to reach greater heights are essential and enormously rewarding experiences. In my life, balancing family, business and my own needs seemed to be the most pressing issue for a very long time.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do not try; just do!
- It is important to focus on the big picture, the completed puzzle. The small details and individual pieces will work out in the end.
- Always aim and strive for perfection, but remember that by definition, it is unattainable, and that's alright.
