Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gene Bernierr, Founder of Pealed Back, located in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Guiding leaders from getting lost in the fog to living their life beyond the fog. My clients are leaders who have grown their team and find themselves in the middle of the transition from being the master of their trade/skillset to the unknown of being a leader who no longer is just in the trench doing.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been drawn to the "Work Smarter, Not Harder" phrase as far as I can remember, and growing up in an entrepreneurial family, work was always important and was a big part of my identity. Yet there was always something off in the people I observed because none of them seemed to truly be happy. As an entrepreneur who's started multiple businesses throughout my life, I slid into what I knew until I couldn't slide anymore because I wasn't working smarter; I was just working harder and not enjoying any part of it. Something had to change, so I started Pealed Back.

Pealed Back at its core is driven by two exploratory questions:

  1. What would life be like if we were excited for each day when our feet hit the ground?
  2. What is beneath this layer?

As a Coach, LiveCast Host, Husband, and Father, I'm on a mission to influence people to discover what it would take for them to live their life with direction, presence, courage, and boldness, to be a guide through the fog and to live their life beyond the fog.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the opportunity to show my children there is a path to being committed to working, responsibility, and still having rich relationships with them.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Understanding motivation is a result of intentional, directed, and focused action and not the starting point. Motivation comes and goes, and learn to define success as the actions to building motivation.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with what you know, and scratch your own itch.
  2. Join, Build, and Find a group of like-minded people to be part of a mastermind or collective. It gets lonely, and you will lose sight of the forest for the trees; this group will help keep you moving.
  3. Hire out the roles you are not good at and don't cheap out. If you hate bookkeeping and accounting, hire incredible resources because those hours you spend doing work that you hate takes away from growing your business and serving your clients.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Change is always happening; it is through change we learn more about ourselves, who we are becoming, and what makes us tick. Don't fight it; embrace it. Allow it to deepen your learning and forward your action.
