Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gabrielle Kane, founder of Peak Performance Nutrition LLC., located in Houston, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who specializes in helping busy people lose weight and discover the healthiest version of themselves through a revolutionary anti-diet approach. I teach each client how to tackle and eliminate cravings, how to make powerful yet maintainable changes to their lifestyle, and most importantly, how to live a life where THEY control their food...not the other way around.
As a Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition, I also help kids, and teen athletes achieve optimal health and "Peak" performance in and out of their sport.
My practice is results-driven. I strive to help my clients get lasting transformational outcomes in as little time as possible without fads, gimmicks, or diets.
Tell us about yourself
I started Peak Performance Nutrition LLC after years in a hospital setting. As a dietitian, I was trained to teach people WHAT to eat but remained constantly perplexed by patients' poor results, even after thorough dietitian education. Over time, I realized the secret. The majority of people don't need to be taught what to eat or what to do. There is, in fact, a much more impactful process to change people's lives and get the results. I realized through experience that the two most powerful ways to help my clients accomplish their nutrition and lifestyle goals were to:
- Challenge them with a new way of thinking about food.
- Provide ongoing, honest accountability.
Although the idea of being my own boss and the promise of a flexible schedule got me started on my business, my client's results and accomplishments keep me motivated day in and day out. I get to inspire, motivate, and change people's lives every day. Work doesn't feel like work when you love what you do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment so far has been the creation of a new anti-diet weight loss program specifically designed to help busy parents reach their ideal weight in a realistic, manageable way so that they can show up energized for their families and impart life-long healthy habits to their children. The program combines my expertise in transformative weight loss with my passion for instilling long-term healthy behaviors in the next generation.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Figuring it all out! When I started, I had no idea what all went into having a successful business. Coming from a clinical setting, I didn't have any formal business training. The biggest challenge for me was the steep learning curve associated with navigating business, marketing, finances, etc. Lots of trial and error! Also, setting boundaries for yourself. When you're an entrepreneur, you get out what you put into your business, but it's important to make sure you still get a good balance of work and life.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Form a routine and schedule for yourself, and always start the day with what's most important for your business. We can easily get caught up in mundane things like checking emails, and before you know it, your energy is gone. Do the most important things first!
- Find or invest in a business mentor - someone who can show you the ropes effectively and efficiently. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure things out on my own, and I really didn't have to do that.
- Create a powerful positive routine for yourself. Start a brag book or gratitude journal - there will be MANY times when you wobble or feel overwhelmed. You must remind yourself how great you are on a daily basis and that you are fully capable of success.
