Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katie Broadhurst, CEO of Peak Flow OBM, located in Fruitvale, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Peak Flow OBM is a boutique online business management agency specializing in supporting adventure travel and tourism businesses. With a combined 20+ years of backend business experience, adventure guiding, B&B accommodation management, and now with certifications in areas like SEO and OBM, we bring you our holistic, modern approach to adventure and tourism business management.

We work with Outdoor adventure & travel/tourism business owners providing the support they need to build online systems allowing them to continuously operate at their highest capacity while creating a sustainable business and lifestyle.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked in tourism since 2004 and 'did it all': raft guided, led hikes, planned multiday international travel trips, guided multiday international travel trips, implemented software solutions at 7-figure travel businesses, and more. During the pandemic, these businesses needed support to get online quickly. We were there to help.

Today, I am motivated by our amazing clients and their ability to provide travel experiences to the world. Today I am guiding business owners along their business journey while they guide their clients on their multiday adventure and travel trips. Their client's transformation and happiness are a direct result of our collaborative and holistic work together.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting invited to speak at webinars hosted by companies and brands I deeply admire. Industry leaders like wmnsWORK and Youli.io. Watching my clients' weekly wins is a little hit day-to-day!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Today, sitting and screentime. The business stuff is easy compared to the aches of back/hips and eye strain that are telling me I can't spend this much time sitting at a computer. This is my biggest challenge, and how to rework my business/offerings to still serve this industry but also how to keep my own body well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be ready to test, adjust, try and tweak over and over and over.
  2. There is so much more stress than in a traditional job - do you want autonomy or time?
  3. Have 6 months - 1-year savings ready to support you while you work for less than minimum wage so you can maintain your lifestyle. This allows you to fully invest in yourself and the business so you can stay focused. This was so helpful to us in our first year!
