Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Pfeiffer, owner of Peaches Skin Care, located in Longbeach, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have been a Holistic Master Esthetician for almost four decades. I have three holistic skincare salons where I teach beauty and aging naturally. No pills, no procedures. I want to help men and women who love who they are and realize that many of the images they see in marketing and social media are false and filtered. So many people have confidence issues and are affected negatively by their skin or messages on aging. We need to let people know that aging is a gift. A beautiful process. I teach Wabi-sabi, embracing the imperfections of life in ourselves and aging as a beautiful gift.
Tell us about yourself
I started as a makeover artist and make-up artist, and I also worked for a few physicians. I found that in every instance, we were covering up bad skin or doing procedures or a pill instead of healing the skin. I knew there had to be a better way. I started to see that the skin would heal once I had clients stop all foundations and concealers and when I showed them how to care for the skin properly. To date, I have helped hundreds of thousands of clients. Social media is our biggest issue! It is harming a generation of young people by sending an unreal and unattainable message about skin and beauty. This is what motivates me every day. I show a real 56-year-old woman, aging with grace and beauty, on my platforms. I also show Before & Afters that we do not alter in any way. I don’t lie and have a procedure and then say it was a product or use a filter or make-up and say this is what beauty should be.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To date, I would have to say surviving a pandemic. We had our three salons closed for over a year, and it was devastating. I had to reinvent myself at 56 and adjust. I started a YouTube channel and focused on online sales; it has saved us. I think being an entrepreneur is about being open to change and being authentic and truthful, and real. People will find you and trust you. Changing lives in a positive way is everything!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
When they closed our salons for over a year with COVID was also one of the most difficult things to happen in our business. Having over 35 years of your work go up in flames in a moment was terrifying for all of us.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Find a guru! Find a person in the business you want or be in and interview them or ask to learn from them. Be honest and open about your intentions. Understand that there are no shortcuts, and it takes work and selflessness, and time. You will get knocked down, and it’s up to you to have the strength and attitude to get back up and fight harder. Be honest! Being able to sleep at night knowing that you are a good human is everything. Money and fame and nothing are more important than that.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
If something or someone seems unreal, it likely is. Be smart and be wise when you are out in this great big world. Find the good spirits in business and life, and those are the ones you support. Be kind! The true example of character is someone that treats those in service with kindness and respect. The golden rule is still something to live by! Do onto others as you want them to do onto you.
