Brighter World One Painting at a Time - PD Sean Studios
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patrick Dilday, Founder, and Artist of PD Sean Studios, located in Montgomery, AL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
PD Sean Studios is an art studio where I paint anything from original fine art acrylic paintings to fan art and even murals. My artwork is available for anyone and everyone, and I do my best to make my artwork affordable for any budget.
Tell us about yourself
I started painting in 2017 as a hobby. Before long, that hobby became a passion, and I am eager every day to create something new on canvas. For me, every canvas is an opportunity to turn imagination into reality.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
It's difficult to choose just one accomplishment. There have been many over the years, but what I'm most proud of is the deals that I make with other creators. Early in my art business, I wanted to create merchandise, and the affordable way to do that was to make it myself. But I don't love making keychains, coasters, magnets, etc. I love painting and designing. So I reach out to other creators that I've met over the years, and I place orders with them to put my artwork on their products. So I can support them, and I get merchandise that I'm confident in and proud to present.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As an artist, I don't like the business side of things. For the most part, I feel like it gets in the way of my ability to create, but it's absolutely necessary. So I schedule times to roll up my sleeves to place orders, restock the studio, handle accounting, taxes, and all the little things that come with running a business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Your business doesn't have to be your passion, but it helps. You'll fight a lot harder to do something you love.
- Don't be afraid to ask questions from people that have more experience. They've been at the starting line and can help avoid pitfalls.
- Research, research, research. Spend as much time as you can researching the industry your business would be in, who your competitors are, how they operate, what licenses and permits are required, and What you can offer the industry that no one else can. And when you feel satisfied that you've done all of the research, do some more. I'm continuously researching new artists, seasoned veterans, and other businesses that can provide services that I haven't even thought of implementing. The research phase is never-ending.
