Helping Women Implement Healthy Habits - PD Health Services
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Penny Hounsome, Owner of PD Health Services, located in Richmond Hill, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is about health and healing. Helping women who are overwhelmed and exhausted from their stress and anxiety. I work with (mostly) women and help them understand their past traumas, how to move past them, and manage their stress and anxiety in a healthy way by showing them how to implement healthy changes into their day-to-day life. Most businesswomen are too busy, tired, etc., to make time for themselves. But without feeling their best, everything else falls into chaos. Helping women take the time they need for themselves to heal and be healthy is why I developed my Coaching practice.
Tell us about yourself
I've been in the Fitness industry for 25+ years. I started as a Trainer and worked my way through to becoming a General Manager of 2 club locations. But I missed working one-on-one. Well, I was working my way up the ladder. I also became a Yoga Instructor, a Marathon/Triathlon Coach, a National Strength & Conditioning Coach, as well as a Life Coach/Nutrition Consultant.
I worked to become a Health Coach after my son died in 2010. I was diagnosed with PTSD, Traumatic Grief, Anxiety, Depression, and Suicidal thoughts. There was a lot of talk therapy and, at times, medication. But I wanted to find a better, more natural way to heal and recover. I spent a lot of time educating myself and experimenting with what worked and what didn't. Staying true to myself and wanting to make my son proud of me is what drives me every day. It's because of that loss that I found a way to recover.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been to see the absolute success of my clients. Nothing makes me happier than watching my clients transform into who they want to be. I could talk about my business financially, but my business is people and their success.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part is, of course, trying to find the time to stay balanced and not get burned out. To follow my own advice and for me to let go of "perfect."
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Have a vision, build a solid plan and follow it. No one will cheer for you as loudly as you cheer for yourself. There will be many, many bumps in the road; just stay the course.
