Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Paulsen, founder of Paulsen Coaching, Inc., located in Cypress, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Teaching coaches, consultants, solopreneurs, and business owners to convert more of their valuable leads into invaluable clients.

Tell us about yourself

My career in sales has been almost 30 years, but I almost didn't last my first 30 days. My name is Scott Paulsen, and as I was completing my collegiate athletic career, I just wanted to be a collegiate coach. But when nobody hired me, I put my finance degree to work, took the first job offer I received, and became a stockbroker on Wall Street... Houston, Texas, that is.

So began my sales career in which I helped many large and small companies open new markets, gain new customers, and build their sales revenues, as an employee. When a new president at the company for whom I was last working let me and my team go because they had different ideas about strategic direction, I decided to never be an employee again. I had built that team from $0 to just over $6 million in under two years, but that didn't matter. What mattered most to them was that I would not play politics; all I did and would do was grow sales.

So now I help those coaches, consultants, solopreneurs, and small business owners grow their sales! I bring the global best practices for sales and business development used by Fortune 500 companies to Main Street America companies, the heart and soul of the American economy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Practicing everything that I preach.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staying focused on what they do best and not chasing every new opportunity that comes along.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe that you are gifted with special skills, talents, and abilities.
  2. Believe that there are people who need what you have.
  3. Believe that the world will be better if you can connect with those who need what you have.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I can teach you to open the doors to new clients. It will be up to you to walk through those doors and deliver what you promise.
