What's your business, and who are your customers?

Parlour is a social community and an environmental-conscious hair salon in downtown Toronto and London, Ontario. Our genderless pricing, student pricing, and safe space, that welcomes all. We are known for our creative colours and cuts but love a good lived-in balayage with layers or classics like a simple bob. We can do it all.

Tell us about yourself

I was born in Northern Ontario, Sudbury, and moved to Toronto in 2001. I got my first time behind the wheel of running a salon when I arrived and a very trendy busy downtown salon. It was the best time of my life. Met some of the most creative people in the city, and I just knew I wanted to be part of this. I wanted to make a place where these artists could grow and make a safe space where people can be themselves and grow naturally within the beauty industry.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would be this year when after the nightmare of COVID closures in 20 and 21, I purchased my first building to house my newest salon in a new city, Parlour London.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest aspect is the weight of everything being on your shoulders. The buck stops with one person, and that would be me. Though it is hard, it is such a great motivator to keep your head up and keep going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You have got to be passionate about your business/service.
  2. Stay positive and do not plan an out strategy.
  3. Be adaptive and ready to switch gears on a dime.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

When you fail, or when you make a misstep (and you will), learn and learn from it. Never dwell on a mistake. Use it.
